Appetite Suppressant – What’s the Best?

Do you have an uncontrollable appetite? Do you find it very difficult to say no to food? Are you always eating? Appetite, on the feeling that you want something to eat has many causes and is prompted by different things. If you can understand what these are, you have a much better chance of ‘suppressing’ your appetite.

To begin with, the best possible appetite suppressant is you. Did you know that there was a constant dialogue going on between your body and your brain? Well there is, and if you can learn to understand the signals between the two, you will have a much better chance of controlling your appetite.

Did you know that the signal that your body sends your brain to say that it is thirsty is very similar to the one that says that it is thirsty? Most of us have got into the habit of not noticing these signals. Nearly all of us answer the thirst signal with food.

We misinterpret the thirst signal as a hunger signal…we think it is our appetite. It is not. The way round this? If you are not sure which signal it is, then drink a glass of water. If in 30 minutes you are still hungry, have something to eat.

If you don’t get enough sleep your body interprets this as being an energy deficiency and signals that it is hungry. It doesn’t really need any more energy, but if you answer it with food you are taking on more calories than you need. The answer here is to get enough sleep – which is 7 – 8 hours’ every night.

The more intentional exercise you take the less appetite you will have. It will take a little time, but it does work.

What about what you eat? If you eat lots of sugary food you are basically eating ‘empty’ calories. They raise your blood sugar and your insulin levels and cause you to feel hungry.

If you can eat a good vegetarian type diet with lots of fruit and vegetables which contain lots of dietary fiber, you will feel a lot less hungry.

Teen Cutting

The recent reports of young star Demi Lovato’s admission to a treatment center, reportedly for cutting, has drawn new attention to this dangerous practice.

“Cutting”, also called self-mutilation or self-abuse, appears to be on the rise amongst teens. In fact, one study found that nearly 17 percent of teens surveyed reported causing deliberate self-harm. Even though it is most commonly seen among adolescent girls, people of any age and any sex can be afflicted with a desire to harm themselves.

Individuals who cut themselves, burn themselves, scratch to the point of drawing blood, pull out their own hair and otherwise seek to cause harm to themselves, are believed to do so in order to cope with strong, and often painful emotions.

Many health professionals agree that people who hurt themselves are crying out for help and don’t know how else to do it other than to cause themselves harm.

This allows the person to cry out for help without saying a word, because asking for help may be too difficult for them. Individuals who identify themselves as “cutters” report feeling a strong emotional release from the pain they experience, one that eases their tensions and helps them cope with whatever they feel they have to cope with.

Cutting can be habit forming and, in some cases, contagious. It can become a compulsive behavior, as the more one does it, the more he or she feels the need to do it more. When a child begins to identify emotional release from self harm as a pleasurable experience, they are more likely to slowly adopt self harm as a way to deal with more and more of their emotions. If these habits are viewed by younger siblings or impressionable friends, the practice can spread relatively quickly, especially if the impressionable youth is made to truly believe that self-inflicted harm would actually feel pleasant. The cutter may think they are experiencing something pleasant, but that’s because their body has released endorphins. Endorphins are produced in the brain and released into the blood as a response to pain, danger and stress. These endorphins produce analgesia and a feeling of well being, helping the child cover the actual emotions they feel. Unfortunately, like most addictive behaviors, the child’s addiction to inflicting self-harm can escalate, requiring them to hurt themselves more and more in order to reach the desired level of pleasure.

Cutting, or the desire to inflict self harm, is one that can affect children of any social class, even kids who would appear to have everything. While cutting and other forms of self-inflicted harm are not considered suicidal behaviors, they are still behaviors that can cause great physiological harm, and children who are hurting themselves should be offered assistance in the form of counselors as soon as possible.

If parents suspect that their child is cutting or causing harm to themselves, they shouldn’t be afraid of addressing the issue directly. This should be done in a private, caring, and non-confrontational environment. The parent should explain why they think their child may be hurting themselves and why they have concerns. The parent can ask the child to show them their arms and legs if covered by long sleeves/pants. Cutters and others who leave marks or scars on their arms and legs will often be seen in long sleeves and pants, even when it would seem inappropriate for the environment.

If scars/marks are present, the child should be evaluated by their pediatrician and referred to a counselor who can help the child and the family get past the cutting.

Teaching Kids About Budgeting

If you have kids, you’ve probably already figured out that teaching them how to handle money is one of the most important skills you’ll ever teach them. As a parent, there are two critical areas for you to take action to help your kids the most when it comes to money and budgeting.

1. Manage your money in a responsible way. Create a simple budget that works for you. Practice good budgeting habits – know how much you have to spend before you spend it. By spending within your self-made budgeting guidelines, you will demonstrate a confidence and security about money that your kids will notice and hopefully emulate later in life. Make a habit of saving. If you don’t follow a budget, don’t save money and you frequently overspend, you will have a great deal of stress about money which your kids will easily pick up on. Which lesson do you want to teach your kids about money? Money is stressful? Or, money is to be respected and commanded in a responsible manner, bringing a sense of confidence and calm?

2. Directly teach them about budgeting and saving money early (before they become teenagers.) Some experts disagree about the effectiveness of allowances and money for chores, etc. – but don’t get distracted by this. How your kids ‘get’ money is quite a different thing from what they do with it once they have it. Help your kids to know the pros and cons of the different things they can do with their money. Kids aren’t generally known for having a long attention span, especially when the topic is boring, so keep your message simple. Encourage them to save a portion of any money they get; a great idea for reinforcing this is to match each dollar they save. Also, gradually help them to understand the different places money flows to in the adult world. For example, explain the sales tax on the receipt for the shirt they just bought – that it is used to pay for roads, schools, etc. Or, if you want something a little more fun for them, playing a board-game like Pay Day or the computer game The Sims can help a lot by giving them a frame of reference for understanding some of the basics of where money goes. However, actively helping your kids to build a habit of saving money whenever they receive it, in the real world, is probably one of the best things you can do to help them build good money skills. Explaining the pitfalls of using credit is valuable too (as well as minimizing your own use of it!), but emphasizing savings is probably more effective at a young age since it’s something they can do now. Teach them that by having a lifelong habit of saving money, they won’t need to borrow as much, allowing compound interest to work for them and not against them.

When your kids get their first summer part-time job or paper route, continue to extend your reinforcement for saving, but now add in a proper budget. After showing them the basics of listing their expected income along with their desired expenses and savings goals, reward them for creating their first budget. Be creative in offering various incentives for them to stick to their budget. By building on the savings habit you taught them earlier on, and introducing them to the concept and value of budgeting, you will have done a great deal to help your children grow into one day being responsible adults.
