The recent recession hit many people hard. Many lost their jobs and those who managed to maintain their jobs probably had to have their pay cut significantly. My cousin Jay was not immune to the recession either. He was an accountant at a local firm. Although he did not lose his job, he felt the strain of increasing living cost due to the price hike of daily items like groceries and petrol. During a recession such as the recent one, Jay knew one of the ways that he could avoid making things worse was by managing his credit card debt. Basically he had to find ways to reduce the amount he already owed on his credit cards by paying them off and at the same time reduce the amount he spends on his cards every month.
Jay started by planning a budget of his expenses and comparing it to his expenses in the previous months. He realized that to manage his credit card debt he would have to make some changes in the way he spends his money.
Basically there would be expenses to be cut and adjustments to be made in order to reduce his monthly debts. If he was lucky, he probably could end up saving some money in the process. Jay looked at his previous bills and prepared to make sacrifices. He realized that the changes he would have to make would have to start with small steps. So he started writing down the three major ways or items that he could immediately cut back like the gold-plated cable plan he had. He changed his cable plan and reduced the number of channels he would be getting. Of course, it would probably be more effective if he simply cancelled his cable TV subscription but a gradual change would be easier to maintain than a drastic one.
Jay also thought that the recession would probably be a good time to start living healthy and at the same time avoid credit card debt. Jay always used one of his credit cards to pay for gas even though his work place was just several blocks away. To reduce the amount he spends monthly on that particular card, he started to walk to work. Of course, he was huffing and puffing on the first few weeks but soon after his body adapted and walking to work did not turn out to be such a task after all. He even found that he liked walking to work because he would meet up with more people along the way like the cute brunette at the bakery. Jay also used to smoke. Now that cigarettes were turning out to cost almost as much as a luxurious item, he decided it was probably the best time to quit smoking. He went cold turkey and he succeeded. It also saved him about a hundred dollars a month now that he was not spending on cigarettes.
As an accountant, Jay also knew that overspending would probably end up causing him to have to enroll into a credit card debt consolidation program. So he ended up making one of the biggest changes in his life; he started living on cash. He did not cut up any of his credit cards as he knew he would have to maintain using and paying them in order to rake up a good credit score. He simply tried to live on cash for as long as he could and for as much as he could. Generally whenever he had cash in the bank he would pay for whatever he needed in cash. He also started separating the purpose of each of his credit cards. For example, one card was strictly for petrol, one card for monthly bills and one card for work related expenses. By doing so, it was easier for him to monitor his spending and also cut his credit card expenses significantly.
Staying away from using credit cards may probably be as difficult for a man as it would be for a woman. Jay also took quite some time to adapt to the new lifestyle he adopted. However, he was focused and rather persistent to avoid burying himself in debts that he managed to withstand any difficulties and continued to pursue his debt cutting methods with perseverance.

Are you looking for an opportunity to earn income from home without having to pay any fees? No membership or registration costs? If you are, then there are some reputable companies that are interested in working with you. No fee, free paid surveys and survey taking jobs are available for teenagers, adults and people practically of all walks of life. It’s a good opportunity to make money without having to spend any money.
So what’s the catch?
The catch is that money is not free and that it will cost you your time. You will have to fill out surveys. Market research companies that gather information for major corporations to be used in the design of products and marketing campaigns, pay you for your opinion. You will be giving your opinion about products and product ideas. The forms are normally short, so you can start making money right away. Companies that pay through PayPal allow you to make money daily, so you don’t have to wait for a check to come in the mail.
While I will not propose that this is a career opportunity, it is something that you can do to bring extra money into your home to help with groceries, bills or whatever. If you would just like some extra money to spend on the weekends, then free paid surveys that are legitimate, can be a great way to add a little jingle to your pocket.
Beware of any paid survey companies that charge money or registration fees.

If you are looking for a cat breed that won’t mind if your children decide they want to play dress up, you may want to take a look at the Ragamuffin cat breed. These cats are very tolerant of children and other pets and will allow children to play games that would have other cat breeds and even many dog breeds running for cover.
The same characteristics that make the Ragamuffin such a wonderful family pet make it a bad choice for people who are not home for long periods of time. This breed thrives on attention and enjoys ‘helping’ its family do routine household chores, such as putting away groceries or folding laundry. Spending a lot of time alone can make your cat very unhappy. After all, a cat breed that will ride around in your child’s doll carriage or attend a tea party obviously loves plenty of company and attention.
The Ragamuffin is one of the biggest cat breeds, weighing in at a very hefty ten to twenty pounds. Although these cats have larger than normal bones, part of their weight also comes from their tendency to carry a bit of extra fat on their bellies. This breed has a big, solidly built body, a wedge shaped head that is a bit round and large eyes that are so expressive that many people say that their cats seem to talk with their eyes. This breed has a long, gracefully tapered tail that is covered in long hair, giving it a bushy appearance. You can find the Ragamuffin in almost any coat color and any pattern. However cats with points can not be shown.
The Cat Fancier’s Association classifies the Ragamuffin as a member of the Miscellaneous class. This cat breed is the only one currently in this category. As the breed becomes more established, it will eventually move to the Provisional class. While the Ragamuffin can be shown, it can not receive any ribbons or awards until it moves from the Miscellaneous class and into a different class.
Ragamuffins have long hair with an extremely soft texture. Despite the fact that these cats are longhairs, the silkiness of their hair makes them easy to care for. This breed is not prone to developing matted hair and one of these cats only needs to be groomed about once a week to keep his coat looking beautiful and tangle free.
Since these cats have a tendency to carry a few more pounds than necessary around their stomachs, you may need to keep a close eye on your Ragamuffin’s weight. If he grows too overweight, you should ask your veterinarian about feeding your cat a weight management cat food. Except for this weight problem, this cat breed has no hereditary health conditions and is an extremely healthy breed overall.
If you want a large, gentle cat that actually enjoys being around children, then the Ragamuffin is the perfect breed for you.

According to the latest report on consumer debt put out by the Federal Reserve, the US consumer debt is over $2.5 trillion. Each year the amount of credit card debt in America climbs higher and higher. Why is American credit card debt spiraling out of control? Well, there are several reasons for the yearly increase in the US consumer debt.
One reason Americans are going deeper into debt is because salaries have not increased enough to meet rising inflation. The 2007 Trends in Earnings Variability Over the Past 20 Years report by the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) stated that approximately “one-in-five saw their earnings fall 25 percent between 2002 and 2003, and about one-in-seven saw their earnings fall by” a decline of more than 40 percent. This significant decrease in earnings for Americans means while the price of gas, food, groceries, clothes, utilities and other basic necessities goes up, the average salary just isn’t keeping up.
Another reason the US consumer debt is rising is because credit card companies spend billions each year on gaining new customers and increasing rate limits for current customers. The average credit card debt for Americans is over $9,000 and even with the current credit crunch, the continuous stream of credit card offers continues to flow.
However, credit card offers don’t mean the recipients have to sign up. Credit card debt in America wouldn’t be growing at the rapid pace it is if consumers were more realistic with their budgets. The attitude of our society has become “I want it now, though I can’t afford it, so I’ll charge it.” If consumers exercised more discipline in their spending, the credit card debt in America would reverse its current course.
Regardless of the reason you may be in credit card debt, you need a solid debt reduction option. Credit card debt consolidation and debt consolidation loans are similar methods of debt relief that can benefit consumers with good credit. Debt settlement and bankruptcy are viable debt reduction options for consumers with bad credit.
US Public Debt in 2008
The US Public Debt (from the federal government) has been increasing for decades. The gross federal debt has increased greatly from $909 billion in 1980 to an estimated $9,575 B in 2008. (The federal debt was about $9,509 billion in July 2008.) In these 28 years the increase has been about $8,666 billion or about 10.53 times for an increase of around 953%. (Source: U.S. Office of Management and Budget, Budget of the United States Government, Historical Tables, annual.) In 2008, we find ourselves facing a federal deficit of from $560 billion to $900 B. (The official figure will be closer to $560 B for political and business reasons.) How much more will you owe if we only spend another $600 B than we collect in US federal taxes in 2008? If you divide $600 billion by 100 million workers then you get $6,000 per worker. If you divide a federal deficit of $600 billion by 160 million workers then you get $3,750 for each worker. The population of the US in mid-2008 was roughly 300 million citizens. Dividing $600 billion by 300 million equals $2,000 for each US citizen, including children under the age of 10 and people over 90.
Some of the increases in our US public debt (US national, federal debt) between 2003 and 2012 will be due to our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, if the battles continue through 2012. What will be the costs? While hard numbers are hard to find and estimates are often off by 50% or more, the costs of these wars in 2007 was roughly $200 billion. This $200 billion for 10 years would equal $2,000 billion or $2 trillion. Since there were few years since 1965 that we paid off any national debt, we will probably not be able to pay off this $2,000 billion during the next 10 to 15 years. The interest on $2,000 billion at 6% for one year is $120 billion. Now you can begin to see the scope of the problem. The costs, including interest, from these wars could easily amount to at least $3 trillion from 2003 through 2022. The $3 trillion or $3,000 billion divided by 300 million equals $10,000 for each US citizen. Expensive wars for over 2 or 3 years tend to bring very large amounts of new debt to the US government and US citizens.
The US trade deficits are another huge source of increases in the US public debt. The following table is data from the US Census Bureau Web site (www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/historical on July 15, 2008):
Annual Trade Balances
Year US Trade Percent
Balance of previous
in $ billions year
1994 -98.5
1995 -96.4 98
1996 -104.1 108
1997 -108.3 104
1998 -166.1 153
1999 -265.1 160
2000 -379.8 143
2001 -365.1 96
2002 -423.7 116
2003 -496.9 117
2004 -607.7 122
2005 -711.6 117
2006 -753.3 106
2007 -700.3 93
2008
Jan. -57.9
Feb. -60.6
Mar. -56.5
Apr. -60.5
May -59.8
Figures are seasonally adjusted.
Average per month for 2008 is -59
First 5 months annualized for 2008 $ -709 billion
You may notice that the foreign trade balance has increased from a deficit of -98.5 billion in 1994 to -379.8 B in 2000 to a projected trade deficit of around $-709 B in 2008. The total increase from 1994 to 2008 is likely to be around 620%! It is amazing that in about 14 years the US trade deficit will be greater than 7 times the amount in 1994. If inflation increased by 5% during 14 years then the factor would be only about 2 times.
According to the US Treasury (http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/NPGateway ) the US national debt on July 3, 2008 was about $9,492 billion or roughly $9.49 trillion. The national debt on July 3, 1998 was roughly $5.53 trillion. So in 10 years it has increased by about 72%. While the interest rate is unknown for the next 12 months, at 5% interest the dollar interest on the US national debt would be about $0.475 trillion or $475 billion. Dividing $475 billion by 100 million taxpayers equals $4,750 for each taxpayer. (I use the number 100 million because it is one-tenth of a billion so you can multiply an amount in billions by 10 and get the number of dollars per individual, and probably not more than 100 million individual taxpayers could afford to pay off things like interest on the national debt and trade deficits. So Dividing $475 billion by 100 million taxpayers equals $475 x 10 = $4,750 for each taxpayer.)
How does this affect you? In several ways; it would take a book to explain them. A few of the ways are the following:
