Do Debt Settlement Companies Offer Real Debt Help?

Rising costs and layoffs have meant that there are now more people in debt than ever before and some of these people are turning to debt settlement companies, also called debt negotiation firms, in an attempt to solve their problems. However, before you sign your name to anything you should do some research and take care not to get caught in the scams that are out there.

It is all too easy for the novice to get confused between debt settlement and debt consolidation; they are not the same things. Many debt settlement companies will talk to you about setting up an account and then charge you hundreds of dollars for doing so — thereby adding to the debt that you already have. Debt negotiation services will also charge you a service fee every month, the amount varies depending on the company and on the amount of money that you owe.

Most debt settlement companies do not make monthly payments to your creditors. The money that you give the company is put into a trust account, then they negotiate with the people that you owe money to and when there is enough money in the account pay off the full debt.

You may owe a lot of money on your credit cards and if you stop paying then the credit card companies will add late payment charges as well as the interest accrued on the debt. A good debt settlement company would contact your creditors and try to get the interest frozen so that you could pay off the debt, but most of these companies don’t do that.

If you do decide to use a debt settlement agency then you should ask exactly what they are going to do for you before you sign anything. Many of them don’t make it clear exactly how they operate. They don’t ask for interest to be frozen for example, and they don’t always contact your creditors.

If they don’t contact the creditors and neither do you, then, while you are waiting for your payments to accrue in a trust account so that they can be paid, your creditors will take you to court and they could have your wages garnished. Meanwhile, you are trying to pay off the debt, and pay a monthly fee to the debt arbitration company thinking that you are getting out of debt. In reality you can end up deeper in debt.

Before you get involved with any debt settlement company try contacting your creditors and ask whether they will freeze the interest so that you can pay off the debt more quickly — most will do this for an agreed period, giving you the chance to at least reduce the debt. Some debt negotiation companies know very well that the money they are taking from you every month for your creditors will not cover the debt — especially once they take their payments off of the top.

This is not to say that all debt settlement companies are out to fleece you of your money when you can least afford it, but it does mean that you should take great care that you know what you are getting into.

The Truth About Christian Debt Settlement Companies

Christian debt settlement companies are in high demand, but are these companies truly religion based companies? Having debt can be very stressful for people and many individuals seek spiritual guidance as they search for the perfect way to manage their debt and find ways to live debt free.

I have always been somewhat wary of sites that say they are Christian debt help sites. In most cases, once you actually get to the site, there is no mention of religion and spirituality. I am not saying that there are no Christian debt settlement sites, but most of them use the name and do not really offer spiritual guidance.

You do have the option of getting you financial guidance one place and your spiritual guidance at another place. Debtors Anonymous offers great support for individuals that have debt and are looking for guidance in changing the way that they manage money. They offer support for people that have gotten into debt through no fault of their own as well as guidance for compulsive over spenders.

Debt settlement is a form of debt elimination that reduces your credit card balances through a negotiation process with the lender. Debt negotiation is something you can do on your own or if you have more than $10,000 in debt you can enlists the services of a debt settlement company.

Debt settlement can actually have your debts paid off in less than 3 years, but it is not without its disadvantages. The biggest of which is what it will do to your credit. It will be negatively affected. For some, this is not an issue because their credit already has negative remarks.

Debt Consolidation Companies In Michigan

Debt consolidation companies attempt to get the credit history of a person back on track. Many borrowers find themselves with poor credit rating after accumulating a lot of debts. Debt consolidation is also used as an alternative to declaring bankruptcy. In the state of Michigan, bankruptcy laws are very severe, therefore, debt consolidation is always a better option. To find debt consolidation companies in Michigan is quite easy, as there is at least one such company in every state.

Before choosing debt consolidation companies in Michigan, debtors should look into the company’s credibility and past performance, to know their method of dealing with the issue. Debtors must be aware that any negative reports on a person’s credit history are removed from the credit report after a period of seven years. This allows a person to correct the mistakes he or she has made, and improve their credit rating now. However, a bankruptcy report stays on the credit history for ten years. This is done to deal more severely with people who mismanage their funds to such an extent that they go bankrupt. However, many such debtors have made efforts to deal with debts by choosing debt consolidation companies. This is even more important in Michigan as the state government does not take defaults or bankruptcy lightly.

Debt consolidation can also be searched for online. Most of them accept debt consolidation applications through their websites, making the whole process easy and convenient. Debt consolidation companies help reduce high payments and can even negotiate with the creditors to lower interest rates. To ensure that too much of debt is not accumulated, debtors are not allowed to apply for or use any more credit while they are working with debt consolidation companies. Debt consolidation goes a long way towards ensuring better credit ratings, which further allows debtors to get better rates than what are regularly offered.
